I was totally devastated when the taco truck that parks a couple miles from my house (taqueria el Rey) suddenly closed. My girlfriend and I would eat there at least once a week.

Taco Tuesday is one of those things I need to look forward to in my life to get through the week.

It didn't take long for us to find a suitable replacement. This place is a very dingy type place in a dingy park of town. Exactly the type of place you would want street tacos from. The quesadillas here are gigantic and filled with plenty of fillings. The verde and rojo salsas are both great, with the latter being very spicy. There is a pretty extensive menu, but we always keep it simple with tacos or quesadillas, occasionally a burrito.

The hefe of this place is a very sweaty, hardworking dude. We typically get take out but have dined in before. This place and its decor isn't going to win you over, and you shouldn't expect it to. This is authentic Mexican food and I wouldn't want it any other way.

    DEFLATED

I want to start out my review with the staff. Our waitress was really nice and she tried to be as helpful as she could when we asked questions. She had to go several times to the kitchen to get the answers. The chef seemed really nice too.

I've got to be honest and say we weren't impressed with the food. It was extremely salty. We all ordered chicken and it was the same chicken in all three different dishes. I would expect some variation or flavor change but that didn't happen.  The chicken was cubed up and seasoned with too much salt and then added to the taco, burrito and enchilada. It didn't have any change in taste. It was also sitting because there was no way the chicken was cooked fresh to order.

My wife got her tacos first and they looked beautiful but at $3 each they were way over priced for street tacos with just onion and cilantro. I wouldn't have minded if the tacos were amazing but they were some of the worse tacos I've ever tasted.  I'm truly confused by the reviews and the ratings here. It was because of the great Yelp reviews that lead us to stop here on our road trip. It was a mistake for us to follow the reviews here and that usually doesn't happen when we do our research.

We had to wait about 10 minutes for our burrito and enchiladas to show up after my wife's tacos. I was also informed that my pork burrito in green salsa wasn't going to happen. What? I was really let down. I decided to get a chicken burrito and then learned it was only chicken, beans and rice. What? That doesn't seem too creative. First, I can't stand rice in my burrito, so I asked for the rice on the side. I then asked if lettuce and tomato were in the burrito and she said no. I then asked to have it in the burrito along with the green sauce that was suppose to be in my pork burrito. The burrito that I created would have been five stars except for the dry salty precooked chicken. The meat was really lacking here.

The enchiladas were just okay too. Luckily our daughter loved her rice and I gave her mine too. She was really happy and finished it all up.

I don't like giving bad reviews but the food was not worthy of five stars. The staff is really nice but I can't eat that. I truly wish it was amazing but it wasn't. I'd never stop here again on a road trip. I left here feeling deflated. This wasn't the hidden gem we were hoping to find.

Whatever you do, do not order from them via DoorDash.  I have been wanting to try their food for a few weeks and saw they deliver with DoorDash.  After 30 minutes I get a call from the DoorDash service center telling me that everything I ordered (3 tacos Azada, 3 tacos Pastor and cheese dip) they were all out of and had to cancel to order.  The tacos were not a special order, nor was the cheese dip.  So whatever their food does taste like, I myself will never know, because I will never visit their restaurant.

I loved the food here. Got the El Molcajete without truly knowing what it was. Really great flavors in the sauce. Balanced and seasoned well. Whole green onions, halved jalapeño, steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo, and was that cactus paddles? It came out ripping hot in a giant stone mortar that will really catch your attention if you are the kind of person that stands in awe of sizzling fajitas. Even the Mexican soap opera on the tv added a little somethin somethin.

Few times have I ever felt so compelled to write a review of a restaurant. Firstly, this is a no-frills venue, but atmosphere be damned, I'm talking about the food. This review also only pertains to the tacos. Onward, then! The tacos at El Fuereno aren't just fantastic... they're the best I've ever had. If you've eaten at various taco trucks and certifiably "hip" taco establishments, you're no stranger to delicious tacos; but to compare the tacos at El Fuereno to the likes of the aforementioned nameless "hip" taco joints is borderline blasphemous. Let me elaborate: whereas the hipster taco scene is centered around creativity, artisanship, presentation (and, of course, they have to taste good), El Fuereno makes simple, authentic Mexican tacos, period. There's a corn tortilla, meat of your choosing, cilantro, onion and some lime wedges. So what's so special, pal? What's so special is precisely the inherent simplicity of the format; there's no hiding behind pickled cabbage, or basil-infused aioli, a simple taco shines only when executed to perfection. I had the carnitas, chorizo, and al pastor; all of which were tender and phenomenally seasoned- best I've ever had. The verde and roja salsas were tasty as well, but I'll refrain from further commentary there; the tacos were so good, I hardly used the salsa. I can't speak to consistency, as this is my first visit, but my god, cross the bridge for this one.
